Volunteer Spotlight

John J. Heine is the RSVP Lancaster County September Volunteer of the Month. Heine has volunteered with Lancaster Meals on Wheels for 18 months.

Heine grew up in Philadelphia, where he had a chance to live among and appreciate people of many different nationalities. After graduating from college, he moved his family to Lancaster.

Heine and his wife, Margaret (Peg), raised four daughters and now have four grandsons, one granddaughter, five great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson.

Heine worked for a major manufacturing company in Lancaster for 40 years before retiring at age 61. In addition to taxiing his school-age family members, he worked a few part-time jobs to keep busy.

In his mid-70s, Heine wanted to have a positive effect on his community.

As part of Meals on Wheels, Heine enjoys doing something positive for people struggling with a temporary or long-term setback. He listens and becomes interested in their stories.

Heine is a life member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He cares for 286 Civil War and 32 Spanish American War veterans’ burial sites, making sure each site is clear of weeds and has a marker and a flag in place.
